Career Options : Oil & Gas Sector Good Choice to Explore
Pradeep Gupta
November, 2017

It's been a while that students in our country doing engineering without any focus on getting jobs or saturation in jobs but, they for sure would like to sustain in this field.  More likely the mechanical and electrical engineers are facing tremendous jobs problem because, they are mostly trying for IES (Indian Engineering Services) and that too with the preparation from coaching centers, while we all know that in India only 1.5% is going for government jobs and 3% in private sectors. Some engineers also trying to  cope up with the  market sentiments and trying to join for jobs without having  focused idea on longtime career priority, better skill set, good salary package and the best experience to nurture themselves.

Here I'm talking about oil and gas sector which requires a lot of engineers not only to fulfill their purpose but, for having lack of engineering resources in it. When you think of the oil and gas industry, oil rigs (offshore) & using heavy machinery may come to your mind. For some, this is a perfect work environment especially if you are bored with office life with lots of variations. So you have a good choice of work environment you prefer- labs or offices, which a lot of jobs can't offer.

Going Places

The drilling industry provides excellent opportunity for entry level & skilled/less educated people who can work up in their career by gaining skill and experience over time. Due to rising apprehensions over sustainability, the sector needs many people to suggest how to continue to get fuel in this planet. If you've come from a background of engineering studies, you could easily work in this sector.

You can travel the world and it's not just the India that needs oil. It's demanded from all over the globe, and once you're trained and experienced enough, the world is your oyster. You will have the plenty of options to travel anywhere you wish or believe too. If you're working offshore, there are various locations you could work for. If you're based in an office, you will most likely be doing core office hours from 9 to 5 in Monday to Friday. If you're based offshore on an oil rig, you'll be working for long hours and extended periods of time; 12-hour shifts for maybe up to four weeks (28:28 rotations). But, once you've completed this course, you'll get the same period of time off work, which means you'd only work for half of the year and get full year salary.

The industry uses the most up to date state of the art technology to get top results. You'll always be learning new methods of technology and how to utilize it in the best possible way. By developing your knowledge as you work in the sector, you are constantly adding new strings to your bow., You would have loads of transferable skills, you could transfer onto new and developing areas of the sector.

Make Big Bucks

You can really earn the big bucks here at this industry. Most salaries for experienced workers in this sector exceed Rs 20 Lakhs annually. If you're starting out as an oil engineer, you can earn up to Rs 6-8 Lakhs/annually once you're qualified. There are a lot of opportunities to grow and climb the career ladder in this sector, and you can even earn Rs 60 Lakhs/annually and higher as a drilling consultant! You do not have to go straight to the bigger companies either, you can work your way up through smaller companies so you can gain the best experience possible. As the oil and gas sector starts to develop, even more, these smaller companies will grow with the industry and be extremely valuable places to work for you.
